I bought it about a week and a half ago and I am still a bit overwhelmed. I don't feel like I'm non-techy, but I am obviously not a computer genius.

Needless to say, I am in love with this magical machine. I take it everywhere...to the point where my friends make fun of me. I just tell myself they're jealous...(I've noticed that the ones who have an iPad, don't tease me. I rest my case).

So after hours of downloading apps with no real purpose, I decided to see what there was for blogging. I researched it. There were not too many choices, but after long consideration of which app was going to get my $2-5, I settled on blogsy. So this is my attempt at using my new app. It seems very cool, however, I started 45 min ago and lost my first post. Let's see if this one actually gets posted to my blog.

Fingers and toes crossed! :)

zanymadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769824097515720236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483385571746599463.post-48464114625035655942011-01-01T23:58:00.000-08:002011-01-01T23:58:32.589-08:00Happy New YearThe wind is howling outside, the rain beating against the house in a fury...a blustery end to the first day of 2011. I made my family french toast and bacon for breakfast, had snacks and watched the new Karate Kid in the afternoon, and made ham, mashed potatoes and corn for dinner. It was a lazy day, spent with the people I love...sans Madi; she spent the night with a friend.

So I sit here now, contemplating the upcoming year. I've got my list of resolutions in my head, one of them being this daily journal; a task I almost failed to complete in time. Rather than the usual resolutions, I've decided to keep it to these things:

1) Be patient

2) Be kind

3) Open my mind to new possibilities

4) Embrace change

5) Give 110% of myself in all I do

6) Love without expectation

Happy New Year...to a wonderful 2011!
zanymadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769824097515720236noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483385571746599463.post-90999864376969194552010-11-25T08:21:00.000-08:002010-11-25T08:21:31.075-08:00What I'm Thankful ForAfter many weeks of not posting, I suddenly find myself sitting at my mom's kitchen table with hours to kill and everyone sleeping. This was not planned, actually, annoyingly enough I could have slept in. My mom misread the directions for the turkey and said it needed to cook for 9hrs...not correct. After getting up at the butt crack of dawn and washing the turkey, I found the cooking directions...it's really only 4-5 hrs. She hadn't scrolled down far enough and gave me the thawing out time. But I still love her. So as I sat here drinking coffee, I realized, maybe there was a reason this happened...and I decided to dust off the keyboard and write a post.

For some reason I have been extremely emotional these last couple of weeks. Granted, I've had a lot going on...a new boss, boyfriend got a job, which created child care issues...but yay...he got a job! Major drama with the ex over Madi's hair...we bleached it platinum and she manic panic'd her bangs purple...this did not go over well (this will be whole different post). And I miss my son...A LOT. Seeing him every few weeks is painful...dropping him off is even more so.

However, with all of the downs, there are ups...and with every disappointment, there is something to rejoice about...And so this is what I am thanful for this year:

My children are healthy and happy.

I am healthy, I have a good job and great friends.

I have a boyfriend who is kind and loving, as well as strong and opinionated...he doesn't bend to my way of thinking. He tells me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear.

That I had an upbringing with values that have served me well...lessons I can pass on to my children.

That I am strong and also sensitive...that I have not become jaded by bad experiences, but had the wisdom to take them as lessons and move forward.

I am thankful for everything that I have...including the problems I face, which keep things in perspective and remind me everyday how blessed I truly am.

To be able to witness the people my children are becoming. To have my heart surge with pride at how sensitive and compassionate my daughter is; while at the same time see how passionate and strongwilled she is when she believes in something. To be able to watch my son grow into a sensitive and strong man...one who is courteous and caring, with a witty sense of humor.

The messy kitchen, which means we have food to eat. A messy house, which means we have a home to live in.

The list could go on and on...and I don't want to bore you to tears. So on this day, I will make a wonderful meal, gather my family around me and thank God for all I'm blessed with.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving with the people you love. zanymadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769824097515720236noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483385571746599463.post-20041977316666557152010-10-23T15:12:00.000-07:002010-10-23T15:12:33.457-07:00Hair Heartbreak...or Maybe Not!My beautiful and spontaneous daughter got bored the other day and decided that her layers needed to be shorter. She had asked me the day before to book her a hair appointment, which I agreed to do. Apparently, it wasn't fast enough for her.

I get this text message that says, "should I tell you now what I did, so you don't flip out when you get home?" I had heart palpitations as I asked her what she'd done. She sent me this picture message:

I looked hard, I squinted...all I saw were really straight bangs and uneven ends. So I asked her if she meant the bangs and shorter hair. She said yes, so I replied with, "Cute! I'm just thankful it wasn't a facial piercing." To which she replied, "Yeah, cuz I would really have the guts to do that!" Good to know...

So I get home, knock on her door and I see what the photo did not reveal...the top of her head is now two inches long. I say in an exasperated tone, "Why did you do that to your hair?!" She asks me to please not lecture her...and that she needs a hair appointment. Yeah, no kidding.

Just the other day she confided in me that she wanted to go back to regular high school! Inside I was jumping up and down and doing an end zone victory dance. Now I'm looking at her hair and wondering what this is going to do to her confidence...and her decision to attend a new school.

I asked her what she was thinking...she said her layers were too long, so she thought she would trim them. I reminded her that I was making her a hair appointment. She said she knew that...she was bored...(one of the side effects of online high school, just say'n). She asked me, "Haven't you ever cut your own hair?" I said, "Yeah, when I was four." I asked her how she wasn't crying and she told me, "I did that earlier."

So I hugged her...and called my new emergency hair stylist, Amy Maggipinto/Miracle Worker, to come to the rescue. She had recently fixed my own haircut disaster just the week before. Only difference is, mine wasn't self inflicted. Amy fit me in the next night. Did I mention that Amy rocks?!

So the next day, after work I picked Madi up and off we went to Bellisimo Salon where Amy works her magic. Amy took one look and made Madi promise to call her the next time she felt the need to cut her hair. She volunteered to be her hair sponsor. I cracked up..."Madi, step away from the scissors...I'm on my way!"

My heart was in my throat as Amy razored away Madi's hair...all of it gone. What remained, was a cute, edgy haircut that completely fit my daughter's personality. I looked at Madi and asked her how she was doing...she said, "I'm fine!"

My daughter never ceases to amaze me. She is strong and fearless. She wants to be accepted, but on her own terms. She has a bleeding heart and a fierce temper. She is loyal, kind and expects everyone to be that way. I am so proud to be her mother...and I cannot wait to see the woman she will grow to be. Madi is going to make a difference in this world...just you wait and see!

A couple of weeks ago, my daughter asked if we could rent The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I explained that it wasn't a movie you rented, it was a movie you went to. She just looked at me like I was crazy and old. She said that she had watched it at a friend's house and they did this Time Warp dance. I cracked up and told her what it's like to go to Rocky Horror.

Fast forward to last Friday...I'm in downtown SLO, on an errand. I look up and there on the Fremont marquee is The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Oct 19th.

I think to myself...this is not a cowinkydink! I got home later that night and told her that we were going to Rocky Horror and she was SO excited.
My dogs on the other hand are not as excited about this as I am.

I knew that Oliver was not going to step one paw onto the damp ground, so I let him go out the front door this morning where there is a covered walkway. Peek-a-boo was also very particular about where she did her business this morning.

So the dogs have been out, I'm fixing breakfast, and it suddenly hits me that the dog's bowls are outside...where it's WET.

This is how much my dogs HATE the rain. They would rather starve than go out under the alcove and eat. Spoiled rotten dogs!

By the time I figured this out...they were HUNGRY!

Eight hours later, I was obsessed and had a long list of blogs to follow. My favorite blog however, was The French Skinny Experiment. I had just started the Atkins diet and after reading Karen's blog, I saw a glimmer of hope at the end of my bread deprived tunnel.

Although I have not committed myself to the French Skinny exercise plan, I have made the commitment to only eat fresh foods. No more processed food for this family! It has been wonderful. I have not lost any weight, but I haven't gained any either. I just can't bring myself to walk 5 miles and do 40-60 flights of stairs. (Karen, I applaud your determination! Although secretly I think you're CRAZY...maybe that's why I like you so much!)

Anyhow, that first week at the grocery store, as I idled down the aisles and read the back of boxes and jars; I was APPALLED! I kept hearing Jamie Oliver on t.v. say, "if it reads like a science experiment, don't eat it." Or something like that. I was screwed...there is NOTHING on the shelves that is fit for consumption. What have I been feeding my kids? Even the bread had preservatives. And that was when it hit me...I would make my own fresh bread!

Now mind you, I don't cook. Or at least I cook, but very few things and moderately well. I fancied myself a baker...and then I tried to make bread. After about 4 loaves of wheat bread, I was covered in flour, in a kitchen that looked like a tornado had ripped through it. As for my bread...it was hard as a rock! Betty Crocker I was not.

Pitching in the towel, I poured a glass of wine and whined on Facebook that my bread could be used as a weapon. A friend of mine immediately responded and said she knew exactly what I was doing wrong. I called her and we made plans to have a bread making (wine drinking) lesson. So after 4 or 5 months of schedule conflicts, we finally had a date! And I had a plan...I was going to make baguettes...just like the baguettes that Karen was always eating on The French Skinny Experiment. So this is for you Karen...my inspiration (in bread making and blogging)!

Time to score the tops of the loaves and into the oven they go. We didn't have a baguette pan. To improvise we turned a cookie sheet upside down, placed parchment paper with corn meal on it on top and placed the loaves on it. We then placed a pan of water beneath the cookie sheets to create steam. Apparently this is what gives the baguette its crunchy crust. We also didn't have a spray bottle to spray the sides of the oven with. We just splashed it on the sides with our fingers. We're hard core. Or rather, Diana is...she braved the heated oven.

Let stand for 3 minutes. Combine the flours and salt in a large bowl. Pour the cool water and the yeast mixture over the flour, and mix with your fingers to form a shaggy mass. Move the dough to a lightly floured work surface and knead for 4 minutes. It should be supple and resilient, but not too smooth at this point. Let the dough rest on the work surface for 20 minutes, covered with plastic wrap or a light towel. (This rest period is the autolyse.)

Knead the dough for 6 to 8 minutes. Don't overknead it: The dough should be smooth, stretchy, and resilient. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turn it in the bowl to coat with oil, and cover it with plastic wrap. Let rise at room temperature ( 75 to 77 degrees F) for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until nearly doubled in volume.

Gently deflate the dough and fold it over itself in the bowl. Reshape it into a ball and cover with plastic wrap. Let it rise for 1 1/4 hours or until it has nearly doubled again. Gently deflate the dough again, reshape into a round, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour. Place the dough on a very lightly floured surface and divide it into 3 equal pieces (about 10 ounces each). Gently stretch one piece into a rectangle, leaving some large bubbles in the dough. Fold the top third down and the bottom third up as if you were folding a business letter. Now form the loaf into a log by rolling the dough over from left to right and sealing the seam with the heel of your palm. Fold the dough over about 1/ 3 of the way each time, seal the length of the loaf, then repeat. You want to gently draw the skin tight over the surface of the baguette while leaving some air bubbles in the dough. Seal the seam, being careful not to tear the skin of the dough or deflate its airy structure. Set aside on the work surface to relax before elongating it, and repeat the shaping process with remaining pieces of dough.

Now elongate each baguette, starting with the first one you shaped, by rolling it back and forth on the work surface. Begin with both hands over the center of the loaf and work them out to the ends until the loaf reaches the desired length. (Don't get carried away, or the baguettes won't fit in your oven!) Place the finished loaves on apeel or upside down baking sheet lined with parchment paper and generously sprinkled with corn meal or on a baguette pan. Cover the loaves with well oiled plastic or a floured cloth and let rise for 30 to 40 minutes until the loaves are slightly plump but still not doubled in volume. The final rise is short, because you want the baguettes to be slightly under proofed; this will give them a better oven spring, resulting in loaves with a light, airy crumb and more flared cuts.

Thirty minutes before baking, preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Place a baking stone in the oven to preheat, and place an empty water pan directly under the stone. Use a very sharp razor blade or lame to make 3 to 5 slashes, depending on the length of your loaves, on the top of each baguette. The cuts should run from one end of the loaf to the other, rather than across it, and the blade should be held at a 30 degree angle to the loaf so that the cuts pop open in the oven. Be careful not to press down too hard, or you may deflate the loaves. About a month ago, the ex decided that he didn't have to talk to me anymore. Instead, he uses my children as the go between to say what he wants to say. It is pathetic...childish...selfish...and damaging to my children. If I leave him a message, my daughter M text's or calls me to tell me his reply. If I text him, she texts me back. It is driving me crazy. Literally.

At the moment, my son Z is living with him, while my daughter goes back and forth every two weeks. (see Teetering on the Edge). Friday night we were supposed to meet halfway to exchange kids. I text messaged him that I needed to meet 30 min later than usual. M text me to say that we were meeting on Sunday because Z was spending the weekend with a friend. So I text him back and said if I don't get to see Z that I wasn't driving to meet him. I know...it was childish. But I was hurt and angry and I reacted without thinking. When I got home, M told me that her Dad was picking her up at 10a.m. I text messaged him that I would meet him halfway on Sunday. He told M to tell me, "F@$% her...tell her I said it just like that." I was so PISSED that he would put her in that position. She didn't want to say it, so she showed me the text. He said a couple more hurtful things to be relayed through our daughter...I'm at a loss...I don't know what to do.

You cannot co-parent if the other parent won't speak to you. These teen years are so vital to their development as adults, and what he is doing is so selfish it makes me sick. I feel like I'm being held hostage...and it sucks.

The kicker of this story...the kids told me he has been going to college online to become...are you ready for this...a psychologist! He wants to counsel troubled children/teens. He wouldn't even allow our own children to go to counseling after our divorce. He threatened to sue them if they did. My mind is boggled...literally.
So, for now I just continue to call or text him only when necessary, to avoid placing extra emotional strain on my kids. I just take things day by day...and try to figure out a solution to the problem, while attempting to stay sane in the process.zanymadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769824097515720236noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483385571746599463.post-23415840321669791222010-09-29T06:59:00.000-07:002010-09-29T06:59:44.190-07:00Teetering On The EdgeThe past few months have been a roller coaster to say the least. This blog that I set out to write, faithfully every morning or so has just fallen to the wayside. That's life, I guess. It just happens whether you are ready for it or not.

My daughter Madi is 15. She and I have had a rocky path since her father and I got divorced. It was an ugly one, and she was one of the wounded. You do what you can to shield them from the shrapnel, but the pieces still manage to get through. Needless to say, my ex and I live 3 hours apart. My son, Zane, who is 13, is living with his father right now. We had a stint of him moving back and forth, switching schools, trying to love us both and keep us close. More shrapnel. Another one wounded. He found his place, he has friends, so I watch from a distance, with a wounded heart. More shrapnel. Madi on the other hand, had been living with her Dad, and last year in the middle of the school year needed to come live with me. It was hard for her to start in a new school in the last trimester her freshman year. Hell, it's hard enough being a teenager and a freshman. She struggled.

So over the summer, she and her Dad thought it would be "best" for her to attend online high school. I was not happy. I worried about her social development, as well as her learning to deal with people and situations that aren't always to our liking. I argued, I discussed, I cajoled...with her of course, as he will not speak to me. I had her willing to give public high school 6 months, with online high school as a fallback. She ran this by her Dad, who changed her mind back to online high school. Yes, this is where you pause and say, WTF??? With online high school, she can live two weeks with me, and two weeks with him. I can honestly say, I hate him.

So after long heartfelt talks with Madi and a few close friends, a lot of crying, and deep soul searching; I caved. I told myself that I would support her decision for the first quarter, if she was not doing well, back to public high school she will go.

So after major drama about who would enroll her, what school, parent access for both parties, she was finally enrolled.

Fast forward two weeks. Madi says in a hesitant voice, "I don't really like online school." I asked her what she doesn't like. She doesn't like that she has to figure out when to do the work, that she forgets to do PE, etc. So logically, I tell her that if she isn't happy, at least she tried it, now she knows and that we should get her enrolled in school before they get any farther into the school year. Her response: "But Daddy will be mad." This is where I breathe in slowly, trying to keep it together. What I really want to do is pull out my hair and scream as loud as I possibly can. Instead, I tell her that what he really wants is for her to be happy, and that if she needs to go back to public school, then he will be fine. She looked at me with this look that said, "Who are you trying to kid..." It broke my heart. It made me angry and frustrated.

So this is where I am...teetering on the edge...it's a fine balance to keep the balance in his home and my own...when the boat is rocked and he doesn't like it, they are the ones who have to deal with it. She hinted that maybe a different high school then the one she attended last year would be best...I don't know if this is a hint that she wants to live with him...her way of feeling me out. So, we will talk. I just want her to be happy.

Bottom line, divorce sucks.zanymadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769824097515720236noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483385571746599463.post-37735763731912492932010-07-14T19:29:00.000-07:002010-07-14T19:29:39.546-07:00Too Much To Ask ForSo I've had a rough couple of weeks...all the way around. I'm driving home today and this song came on the radio and it just summed up my thoughts for the last two days:

AM NOT THE DOCTOR by Alanis Morissette

I don't want to be the filler if the void is solely yours

I don't want to be your glass of single malt whiskey

Hidden in the bottom drawer

I don't want to be a bandage if the wound is not mine

Lend me some fresh air

I don't want to be adored for what I merely represent to you

I don't want to be your babysitter

You're a very big boy now

I don't want to be your mother

I didn't carry you in my womb for nine months

Show me the back door

Visiting hours are 9 to 5 and if I show up at 10 past 6

Well I already know that you'd find some way to sneak me in and oh

Mind the empty bottle with the holes along the bottom

You see it's too much to ask for and I am not the doctor

I don't want to be the sweeper of the egg shells that you walk upon

And I don't want to be your other half, I believe that 1 and 1 make 2

I don't want to be your food or the light from the fridge on your face

At midnight, hey

What are you hungry for

I don't want to be the glue that holds your pieces together

I don't want to be your idol

See this pedestal is high and I'm afraid of heights

I don't want to be lived through

A vicarious occasion

Please open the window

I don't want to live on someday when my motto is last week

I don't want to be responsible for your fractured heart

And it's wounded beat

I don't want to be a substitute for the smoke you've been inhaling

What do you thank me

What do you thank me for

I have become addicted to reading blogs. I read them for hours. I love it. I love to look at the pictures, and the creative layouts.

I decided to start a blog a few weeks ago, and I HATE the way it looks. I am a total newbie, and I was wondering how to make the title box thingy. Do you have any advice you could lend...or step by step instructions? ;D I am not out to conquer the blogging world, just ramble to no one in particular about the frustrations and joys in my day to day life. My problem...I'm OCD. I cannot write, because I am consumed with the self critical, mumbo jumbo going through my brain about how my blog looks. It's pathetic, and it's making me crazy.

(So much for getting past my psycho babble in my head and breaking free!)

So please, all you creative geniuses out there...HELP!!

It has just occurred to me that I only have one follower...Karen, any advice??? (BTW...thanks for being my one follower, you ROCK!)

So anywho...if anyone manages to read this, please lend me your advice, or as I said before, step by step directions would also be GREATLY appreciated!!

Sincerely,
Frustratedzanymadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769824097515720236noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6483385571746599463.post-17706768568249246202010-06-18T19:49:00.000-07:002010-06-18T19:49:11.627-07:00The Deep EndJust do it...

one step at a time...

Oh my God! I have done it. I have broken through my paranoid, schizophrenic self talk and actually started typing!! Wooo Hooo. Sheesh. I'm such a neurotic baby. I've been staring at the computer screen "thinking" of what to type. Completely over-analyzing everything, as usual.

I need help.

Serious help.

I need a mental break.

I need a vacation from my life.

Don't get me wrong, I love my kids, my bf, my family and my dogs and sometimes, my job. But I have reached this place where I just feel like if I don't "DO SOMETHING", my head is going to pop off.

So since I can't leave my family, however dysfunctional it is, I decided I would blog. I was wildly excited at the thought...my little escape every morning before I go to work...(I get up 45 min earlier than I have to during the week, so that I can read blogs and feel a little more "normal")...could be utilized as my creative/venting session. And no one would need to know...

NOT.

My just turned 15 year old daughter logged onto the computer and said, "You started a blog?"

Me: "Huh?"

Madi: Turns the computer screen around. Blogger...big as life blares at me.

Me: "Oh that...I was just messing around."

Madi: "The Deep End?" Looks at me with that teenage, 'I know all' look.

Me: "I just thought I would try it. I made the page, but that's it."

Madi: "It says there are 2 posts."

Me: "They are drafts. Give me the computer."

Madi: She looks at me with this look like..."I'm going to read what you wrote...hmmmm...and then text all my friends about how ridiculously crazy you are."

Me: (inside my head that is ready to pop off) F@%&!!!

It never ends...there is no privacy, no moments to yourself. It's like trying to use the bathroom, ALONE, once you have kids...never again.

So anyways, after much deliberation with the voices in my head, I decided, "F IT!!" I'm jumping in...deep end, here I come!zanymadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769824097515720236noreply@blogger.com0
